While the government in Kinshasa would like to keep power at any cost, the majority of Congolese are eager to get rid of this ineffective and oppressive regime. The standoff has created deep distrust between the population and the government under President Kabila, and the socio-economic fabric unravels day by day. The end of the Cold War and the advent of perestroika witnessed the debilitation of African dictatorships.
